A school-led approach to Initial Teacher Training
Initial Teacher Training (ITT) is now a key part of the role of Teaching Schools. The government wants outstanding schools to play a greater role in training new entrants to the profession and increasingly, in England, we are moving towards a more school-led approach to teacher training. Teaching Schools are at the forefront of this approach.
The School Direct pathway to teacher training
School Direct courses are based on the skills providers are looking for in a newly qualified teacher (NQT). School Direct is an employment-based teacher training route which gives schools more control over what training is provided and how it is delivered.
Schools recruit trainees from applications received via UCAS. As a Schools’ Direct train in at least two good schools, getting the chance to learn ‘on the job’The expectation is that, once qualified, the trainees will go on to teach in that school, or another school in their federation or alliance.
The idea is a simple one: take the very best schools, ones that are already working to improve other schools, and put them in charge of teacher training and professional development for the whole system.
